VST is the most common format and can run in most DAWs on Mac and PC. Audio Units (AU) is a Mac-specific platform, which Logic uses exclusively. Plugin formats: There are three common plugin formats: Audio Units (AU), VST and AAX. Plugins only work within host software, and there are several formats of plugin, some of which are specific to particular DAWs.
